History

Founded in 1941 by Mrs. Winnifred Stebbing; the Naylor Road School has grown from a small nursery into a complete lower and middle school for ages three through Grade 8.
While the main campus is located in a Pleasant residential neighborhood on Naylor Road, the program for three and four year old students is conducted in our Annex located in the Ryland Epworth Methodist Church at 3200 S Street, SE. This location offers easy access by car and by public transportation for commuters coming from all parts of the Metropolitan Washington area.
The school is privately owned, multi-racial, and non -denominational. We teach basic attributes of self-discipline, courtesy, honesty and consideration for and acceptance of the rights of others. The administration and staff are dedicated to providing each child with the opportunity to fully develop his/her educational potential in preparation for higher education and the real world.

Philosophy & Mission

Our philosophy is to affirm each child's sense of self-worth, to use age-appropriate educational methodologies, and to reinforce by example that excellence is achievable when best efforts are applied.
We teach children to love learning, to value perseverance, to show respect, and to exercise responsibility.

Behavioral Guidelines

While stressing the development of each individual, the school has the obligation to create and maintain an atmosphere of civility and mutual respect for the total school population. Behaviors which interrupt or interfere with an orderly instructional environment are unacceptable. In all cases, Naylor Road School reserves the right to dismiss at any time:

  • Any student whose behavior is inappropriate for school and does not serve the best interest of the school
  • Any student whose parents refuse to cooperate with the rules and regulations of the school.

Uniforms

Students are expected to wear the prescribed uniforms at all times unless the school office has sent home a note with other instructions.

School Hours

Even though the instructional program is from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. the school is open from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. affording before and after-school care as part of the tuition. Parents who do not pick up their children by 6:00 p.m. will be billed a late fee for each occurrence.

Teacher Conferences

We encourage parents to schedule conferences with their child's teacher on matters related to the instructional program. We maintain an "open door" policy and welcome parents at anytime to visit classrooms after signing in at the office. Conferences, however, must be scheduled, since it is not fair to consult with a teacher while instruction is taking place.

Report Cards

Report cards will be issued three times during the school year for all Pre-Kindergarten students.

The Academic Program

Using the phonetic approach, we emphasize sound/symbol association skills, pre-reading and reading readiness skills. We ensure that children explore math concepts, appreciate literature, and engage in pre-writing activities. Our students are exposed to a second language (Spanish).
We stress the importance of social interaction, respecting the feelings and property of others, and encourage independence and positive coping skills to develop self-control.
Great care is given that the most modern materials are used.
Field trips are scheduled to offer the opportunity to explore various resources of the area such as the museums of the Smithsonian Institution, universities, embassies, and theaters to broaden the horizons of the students.
