History

Founded in 1941 by Mrs. Winnifred Stebbing, the Naylor Road School has grown from a small nursery into a complete lower and middle school for children ages three through Grade 8.
The main campus is located in a pleasant residential neighborhood formerly known as Randall Highlands which is near Pennsylvania Avenue just east of the Sousa Bridge and Capital Hill. The program for three and four year old students is conducted in our Annex located in the Ryland Epworth Methodist Church at 3200 S Street, SE.
Both locations are easily accessible by car and by public transportation for commuters coming from all parts of the Metropolitan Washington area. Naylor Road School does not offer transportation.

The school is privately owned, multi-racial, and non -denominational. We teach basic attributes of self-discipline, courtesy, honesty and consideration for and acceptance of the rights of others. The administration and staff are dedicated to providing each child with the opportunity to fully develop his/her educational potential in preparation for higher education and the real world.

Philosophy & Mission

Our philosophy is to affirm each child's sense of self-worth, to educate him/her by using exacting educational methodologies, and to teach by example that excellence is achievable when best efforts are applied. We employ a text- based intensive curriculum that values scholarship, perseverance and responsibility. We offer small classes of eighteen or less allowing for great one on one interaction.

Behavioral Guidelines

While stressing the development of each individual, the school has the obligation to create and maintain an atmosphere of civility and mutual respect for the total school population. Behaviors which constantly interrupt or interfere with an orderly instructional environment are unacceptable. In all cases the Naylor Road School reserves the right to dismiss at any time:

  • Any student whose behavior does not serve the best interest of the school or the school population.
  • Any student whose academic and/or social progress remains at an unsatisfactory level as determined by the school.
  • Any student whose parents refuse to cooperate with the rules and regulations of the school.

Uniforms

Students are expected to wear the prescribed uniforms at all times unless the office has sent home other instructions.

School Hours

Even though the instructional program is from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the school is open from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., affording before and after-school care as part of the tuition. Aftercare hours is a time for students to complete homework.

Testing

A variety of standardized tests are used to help evaluate and improve the instructional program of the school. Achievement tests are given each Spring to certain grades.
Students transferring to Naylor Road School from other schools may be tested before their placement is determined.

Teacher Conferences

We encourage parents to schedule conferences with their child's teacher on matters related to the instructional program. We maintain an "open door" policy and welcome parents at anytime to visit classrooms after signing in at the office. Conferences however, must be scheduled, since it is not fair to consult with a teacher while instruction is taking place.

Report Cards

Report cards will be issued three times during the school year for Kindergarten through Grade Eight students.

Kindergarten Program

The primary objective is for all children to attain the basic verbal, reading and mathematical skills necessary for progress into more formal academic programs in first grade. Our program is both thorough and intensive using the latest proven methods and materials available. Only a full-day program is offered. Students receive instruction in conversational Spanish.

Grades One through Five

Using the phonetic approach, we teach spelling, English language arts, reading, mathematics, social studies, science and Spanish. Our students are exposed to technology through computer experiences. Field trips also offer the opportunity to use the various resources of the area such as museums, theaters, universities, embassies, public and private agencies to broaden the horizons of the students. We maintain high academic standards through a faculty that is dedicated to helping each student reach his/her highest potential. Great care is taken to use only the best and latest materials available.

Middle School (Grades 6-8)

Grades 6, 7 and 8 constitute our middle school. Students are in small classes and receive intensive instruction in English Language, Literature, Mathematics, Social Studies (Geography, U.S. History for 7th and 8th), Science, Spanish and Health. Experiences are periodically available in the arts. Field trips and projects afford students the opportunity to explore learning in non-traditional educational settings.
